Last week, Covered California unveiled its "Give the Gift of Health" campaign. The initiative aims to encourage young adults to sign up for health coverage. Mothers and grandmothers, who tend to be a family's medical decision makers, are the primary target for this campaign.

As the deadline for getting coverage in 2014 nears, we're issuing a News Release with the following information to keep people up-to-date on what needs to be completed when.

Consumers signing up for a plan through Covered California should keep in mind these key dates:

• December 23: Individuals must choose a plan by this date for coverage beginning on January 1.
• January 6: The insurance company selected by the consumer must receive a payment by this date in order for coverage to start on January 1.
• March 31: The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has identified this date as the last day to enroll in coverage through a health exchange.
• April 1: If uninsured on this date, consumers face a penalty of $95 in the first year, or 1% of their income -- whichever is greater.
