Consumers signing up for a plan through Covered California should keep in mind these key dates:
- December 23: Individuals must choose a plan by this date for coverage beginning on January 1.
- January 6: The insurance company selected by the consumer must receive a payment by this date in order for coverage to start on January 1.
- March 31: The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has identified this date as the last day to enroll in coverage through a health exchange.
- April 1: If uninsured on this date, consumers face a penalty of $95 in the first year, or 1% of their income -- whichever is greater.
